A popular but complex game, bridge has an accrediting organization, the American Contract Bridge League, which awards ranks to accomplished players. Whether or not you accumulate enough points to achieve an official rank, playing bridge provides both social and cognitive benefits. Studies have shown that stimulating your brain with challenging games sharpens your mental acuity, slows down age-related cognitive decline, and even delays the onset of conditions such as dementia.
A study conducted by the University of California, Berkeley, found that exercising short-term memory, visualization, and sequencing by playing bridge had the unexpected positive effect of boosting players’ immune systems. In addition to improved cognitive performance and health, the researchers also reported that bridge-playing patients were less likely to be depressed, tended to exercise more, and had a better overall quality of life.
